A Short and Sweet POV Breakdown for Oathbound

Oathbound, the third book of The Legendborn Cycle series by Tracy Deonn, breaks the mold in many ways, but especially when it comes to POVs. Four new POVs are included in Oathbound in addition to Bree’s. The never-before featured character voices are William, Mariah, Natasia, and (very briefly) Nick.

Bree’s POV comprises 70% of Oathbound, so her voice is still very front and center. Here’s the full breakdown:

  • Bree: 449 pgs, 70% of book
  • William: 80 pgs, 13%
  • Mariah: 58 pgs, 9%
  • Natasia: 44 pgs, 7%
  • Nick: 9 pgs, 1%

Nick may have the shortest POV in Oathbound, but much like his character, the placement of his POV is VERY STRATEGIC.

Nick’s 9-page POV arrives right around the 50% mark. It’s wedged in the middle of the book, almost as if it is like….

…a tiny shard in the sternum on the book!

Isn’t Tracy Deonn incredible?

The dead-center placement of Nick’s POV is no accident. To me, it definitively mirrors one of the most important events in Nick’s character arc thus far: the implantation of the Shadow King’s crown shard in his chest, right by his heart.

Nick bargains with Ava for this shard. He agrees to go to Penumbra with her (in pursuit of the Shadow King’s crown, or what’s left of it) if she connects one of the shards she already has to his heart as “insurance.”1

The insurance Nick seeks is for Bree. He wanted a method to save Bree should Arthur ever find a way to possess her again. With the shard, Nick will be able call on Arthur and draw him straight out of Bree’s body and into his own.

Thank you for reading the fourth installment of my new series, Deonn’s Pencraft, where I plan to explore details I annotated in Oathbound by Tracy Deonn. I’m on my second read of the book and look forward to sharing dozens of deep dives on its themes, humor, and imagery. I’ll also be sharing several annotation projects that you can do yourself!

Check out the whole series here.
