low spoiler warning: cameos discussed

Ali Hazelwood’s latest book Problematic Summer Romance is a spinoff story from a previous novel that features the side characters Maya and Conor from Not In Love front and center. (They are attending the destination wedding of Not in Love‘s main characters, Rue and Eli.)
What I found so charming about Problematic Summer Romance is that it has more characters from other books in the Ali Hazelwood universe. That’s right, Maya’s and Conor’s story features cameos!
I am going to limit the details I share about these cameos to keep this post as low-spoiler as possible. However, because I want you to be able to annotate every bit of the cameos in Problematic Summer Romance, I’m giving the exact page numbers of the cameo appearances with only the briefest of overviews for how the cameos fit into the story overall.
Maya is the crucial link.
The FMC of Problematic Summer Romance, Maya, is the conduit for all character connections. Ali Hazelwood positioned her to be the through line between Deep End and Love Theoretically. Without Maya, the cameos wouldn’t be possible.
Here’s how the dots connect between Maya in Problematic Summer Romance and characters in Deep End and Love Theoretically:
- DEEP END: While in Italy, Maya runs into Lukas from Deep End, and she ends up texting with Scarlett from Deep End too. (In Problematic Summer Romance, Lukas and Scarett are vacationing in Italy.)
- LOVE THEORETICALLY: Maya is considering a position at MIT with the one and only Jack Smith from Love Theoretically. When Maya updates her brother Eli on the position she’s considering, Elsie and Georgina get mentioned in passing too!
